Home Security Tips for Vacationers
Posted on Mon, Feb 14, 2011
With most Massachusetts schools closed for February vacation next week, there may be many of you heading elsewhere for a change of scenery. Whether you head south to a warmer climate or north to take advantage of the ski season, be sure your home is protected while you're away.
Don't let your home be an easy target. Burglers can be deterred if they are forced to work in light, if your home takes a long time to get into or if they have to make a lot of noise to gain entry.
Did you know that most insurance companies provide 2% to 15% discounts on homeowners insurance policies for devices that make a home safer such as dead-bolt locks, window grates, bars and smoke/fire/burglar alarms.
Before heading out for a little R & R, follow these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for securing your home.
- Leave blinds open in their usual position.
- Have mail and packages picked up, forwarded or held by the post office.
- Lower the sound of your telephone ringer and answering machine so they can't be heard outside.
- Arrange to have your walk and driveway shoveled.
- Stop newspaper deliveries.
- Ask a friend to pick-up "throw-away" newspapers and circulars.
- Use automatic timers to turn lights on and off in various parts of the house at appropriate times. Consider connecting a radio to a timer.
- Tell police and dependable neighbors when you plan to be away.
