Factors Determining the Cost of Motorcycle Insurance
Posted on Thu, Apr 21, 2011
Like any other insurance, the cost of motorcycle insurance is dependent on many different things, some of which you have control over and some you don’t. Also, the choices you make when purchasing a policy can have a significant impact on the premium you pay.
Let’s take a look at some of the factors influencing motorcycle insurance premium costs:
- The type of bike you ride - High-powered sport bikes are going to cost more to insure than others. Show bikes, customized choppers, and some vintage models will also typically have higher rates than average, mid-range cruisers.
- Your age and driving record - Insurance is all about risk. Just like auto insurance, insurance companies feel that younger riders are greater risks than more mature, responsible riders. Also, tickets and collisions will drive your costs up when it comes to motorcycle premium costs.
- Where you live - Motorcycle insurance requirements vary depending on where you live. If you live in an urban area, your average motorcycle insurance costs will likely be higher than in a rural area because there is greater potential risk of accidents or theft.
- Your skill as a rider - First-time motorcyclists have a higher average motorcycle insurance cost because they have less experience on the road.
- Deductibles - The higher the deductible, the lower the insurance rate and vice versa. If you are willing to pay more out of pocket by going with a higher deductible then you will pay less when it comes to the cost of your premium.
There are a few things you can do to keep your motorcycle premium low.
- Safety Course – Often times, you can become an “experienced” rider after taking a rider safety course. You may also be able to fix negative marks on your driving record through safety courses as well.
- Winter Storage – If you don’t plan on driving your motorcycle during the coldest winter months, change your coverage so that you are only paying for storage. Just be sure to change it again before you drive it and yes, this includes if you only want to take it out for a spin on that one warm day that often appears mid-winter, right before the biggest snowstorm!
Motorcycle insurance coverage can offer a lot of different options so it is best to thoroughly go over everything with your insurance agent to ensure that you have the level of protection that you need.
