The Atlantic hurricane season is still going strong until November. Every coastal state from Maine to Florida could potentially be hit by a storm. Increasing development along the coastal areas of these states has put more and more homes at risk of severe windstorm damage.
Just because the Blackstone Valley is about an hour away from the coast, doesn't mean it's immune to hurricane or windstorm threat. Check out this video from CBS on how to be prepared if a hurricane or extreme winds blow through your neighborhood.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, less than a fifth of U.S. homeowners have a flood insurance policy that protects their property and personal belongings, even though more than four out of every five natural disasters nationwide involve flooding.
Coverage for flood damage, including storm surge caused by hurricanes, is excluded under standard homeowners and renters insurance policies; however flood insurance is available both from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and from a few private insurance companies.
