Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Fires...Is Your Business Prepared?

natural disastersAs many as 19 communities reported damage after two powerful tornadoes ripped through Massachusetts. The twisters downed power lines, caused property damage to homes and businesses, and resulted in 4 fatalities. Is your business prepared to deal with a local, regional or even national disaster?

Large-scale natural disasters are not the only threats to business shut down. Even a temporary regional power outage could force your business to stop, if you don't have a plan in place that addresses how you will continue working under those conditions. Business owners should prepare for the possibility of a disaster by reviewing the following tips.

New OSHA Fall Protection Changes for Residential Contractors

OSHA has issued a new Fall Protection standard for residential contractors. They will no longer be able to use the alternative fall protection measures (OSHA Directive 3.1) for protection from fall exposures in residential construction.

29 CFR 1926.501(b)(13) mandates that all residential contractors doing work six feet or more, must adhere to conventional fall protection. The new mandate becomes effective on June 16, 2011.

What It Meansfall protection equipment
OSHA requires employees subject to falls of 6 feet or more (10 feet on scaffolding), to a lower level on a construction site, be protected from injury through various means such as use of a personal fall arrest system, guard rail system, safety nets or more.

Additional information can be obtained on OSHA's "Fall Protection in Residential Construction."

Solutions with Surplus Lines Insurance

Surplus lines insurance is a great option when insurance cannot be purchased from a company licensed in the state of Massachusetts because it is either not available due to state restrictions or because the risk is so great that it requires a non-standard, unregulated rate.

Surplus line carriers are not bound by most of the rate and form regulations imposed on standard market companies, allowing them the flexibility to change the coverage offered and the rate charged without time constraints and financial costs associated with the filing process which is good for both the company and the policyholder. Although the building is condemned, the business is still able to operate because of the company's extensive diisaster recovery plan. Read full story.
